Mailbox Peak - Old Trail

As of June 15, 2026, the Old Mailbox Peak trail is snow-free and in good condition. Parking can fill up, so arriving early is recommended, with overflow parking on the roadside.
The trail remains steep and challenging, particularly the final third which is rocky and uneven. Some reports from mid-April noted significant snow and icy conditions on the upper sections, requiring micro-spikes and poles, but by May, the trail was largely clear. One large blowdown was reported around 2500' in mid-May, with a slippery bypass. While generally well-marked, some hikers have reported minor route-finding challenges higher up. Wildflowers are abundant, and wildlife has been sighted, including a black bear near the trailhead in early May.
