Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge

Puget Sound and Islands

updated 1 week ago

As of March 14, 2026, Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge reports excellent conditions for birdwatching. Parking lots are filling by late morning, so arrive early. A $3 cash fee is required; America the Beautiful passes are accepted but not for windshield display.

The refuge is snow-free, and roads are suitable for all vehicles. While most boardwalks are open, recent reports (January 4 and December 20, 2025) mention closures due to hunting season on the final 700 feet of the long boardwalk and potential safety concerns on other sections. Despite these minor closures, the main estuary boardwalk remains accessible, offering views of abundant waterfowl, harbor seals, and other wildlife. Bring binoculars for the best viewing.
