Summit Lake

Mount Rainier Area

updated 11 months ago

As of February 16, 2026, access to Summit Lake via the Carbon River area is indefinitely closed due to the Fairfax Bridge (SR-161) closure, as reported on April 14, 2025.

Previous reports from winter 2024-2025 indicate significant snow and ice accumulation. High clearance, 4WD vehicles with potential chains or recovery gear were recommended for the road leading to the trailhead, with some drivers parking miles below due to impassable conditions (December 1, 2024; January 12, 2025; February 28, 2025). Snowshoes were consistently required from the trailhead onwards, with several feet of snow reported around the lakes (January 12, 2025; February 28, 2025). Crampons were also recommended (December 4, 2024). Some reports noted a packed trail to the summit, but post-holing was still present (December 1, 2024).
